ENGLISH VERSION

My friend and colleague Faizal (first picture) was the one who gave me RM250 which was part of the winnings for a competition that his Innovation Team won. That was what I started with to build the Reflexology Path in the college Herb Garden. Of course, that amount was not enough. From my estimation, I needed about RM550 and so I went about getting my colleagues and friends to contribute to my project. Happily everyone was very cooperative and in no time I managed to get the amount required. The college contractor agreed to build the path for free and so I did not need to worry about labour cost.
I had initially planned to hold the opening ceremony at the beginning of the new semester but since Faizal's request for a transfer to Sarawak has been approved and he has to report for duty at the beginning of January, I had no choice but to hold it during the holidays. I had wanted him to be present during the ceremony.
At exactly noon today, the director of the college, Puan Hajah Intan Suhana bt Kamarudin, officially declared the Reflexology Path open. It was a very simple opening ceremony. What is important is that the project was successfully carried out and now we have a beautiful walking path. The path not only helps to promote health among the denizens of the college, it also adds to the aesthetics of the Herb Garden.

Benefits of Reflexology Walking Paths
  • According to traditional Chinese medical theory, regularly walking on reflexology walking paths:
  • Stimulates reflexology areas and pressure points in your feet that correspond to all major body organs and areas.
  • Stimulates vital energy and blood flow throughout your body.
  • Relieves stress, improves balance, enhances physical and mental well-being.
  • Allows you to control the length and amount of stimulation, e.g. short, light walks on smooth stones, or longer walks on thinner, sharper-edged stones.
  • Also, cobblestone walking reflexology for elderly people and anyone in poor health or recovering from injury or illness is particularly beneficial as it's a gentle yet deep-working therapy.

FALSE MOREL

I spotted these round brain-like mushrooms growing near the Science Lab early one morning. My colleague who was with me told me that it was most probably poisonous and not to touch it. For your information, some mushrooms can sicken or kill you if eaten. I think the type of mushrooms I saw are called "false morels." This type of mushroom has wrinkled, irregular caps that look like brain coral or saddles, with a bottom edge that hangs free around the base. They are poisonous and must be avoided at all costs.

REFLEXOLOGY PATH FOR HERB GARDEN

One of the projects to beautify the college Herb Garden was to build a Reflexology Path.  The funding for the project came from some of the lecturers and staff in the college who contributed funds to buy the materials for it. The labour was provided free by the contractor who was doing some building work for the college.

TORCH FLOWER IN FULL BLOOM

When I checked on the Herb Garden this morning, I discovered that the Torch Flower (bunga kantan) was in full bloom.  Looks really magnificent.  Besides using it as an ingredient for cooking assam laksa, the Torch Flower (Etlingera elatior) has uses in traditional Malay medicine.

  1. helps one to maintain a youthful appearance;
  2. helps to remove body odour of a lady who has just given birth.  One needs to cut the stem of the flower into several small sections, pound and boil.  The water is used for bathing after it has cooled.
  3. The seeds of the plant can be used as an appetiser.
  4. It is believed that the torch flower can helped to increase a man's libido.
Before following any of the traditional remedies, it is adviser to consult a registered medical practitioner first.

MALAY VERSION
Semasa melawat Taman Herba kolej pagi tadi, saya mendapati Pokok Kantan berbunga.  Cantiknya.  Selain digunakan untuk memasak Asam Laksa, Bunga Kantan (Etlingera elatior) digunakan dalam rawatan traditional Melayu.
  1. Diguakan untuk tujuan mengawet muda.
