PUTTING COLOUR BACK INTO FADED GARDEN TABLE

The sunflower garden table that was painted on three years ago is fading.  And instead of making the garden look prettier, it has given the place a jaded feel.
(Lukisan bunga matahari di Taman Herba dah menjadi purdah)
So I took it upon myself to recolour the sunflower. Below you can see the finished product of my colouring session.  What do you think?

This is the Jarum Tujuh Bilah plant that is found in the college herb garden. It was grown from a cutting.

It is used in traditional medicine in Malaysia to treat cancer. To find our more, read the information below.

Saecnarosa or in Malay Pokok Jarum Tujuh Bilah or Pokok Tujuh Jarum (Seven needles plant) from the family of Cactaceae is a cactus plant with leaves, probably not a common type of cactus plant as most of the cactus I have seen are without any leaf. This plant originally came from Korea but could be found in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and can live in almost any type of condition except cold area. Hmm, that means it can't be grown in Cameron Highlands. However it grows better under the hot sun and in tropical climate.

How's how it is taken:

There are three ways to prepare this herb:

1) You take 2 slices of Pereskia leaves and mix it with warm water, let it infuse for about 2 minutes and drink it as a tea.

2) You can eat it raw

3) You can juice it by blending several leaves of Pereskia.

After taking it, you are advised against taking any other types of drinks immediately as you would lose its potency. I should think you could drink some plain water to wash it down though.

VERSI BAHASA MELAYU

TENDING TO THE HERB GARDEN IN THE COLLEGE

When it is holiday time and the janitors are not around, I try to go back to college to tend the plants in the herb garden. I took over the management of the garden in 2007 and have added a lot of herbs. Many of the herbs that were originally there had died and were replaced with different ones like pokok ajaib, semangkuk, lidah ayam, zebrina, tunjuk langit, halban, mata itik, cabang tiga, senggugut, telinga gajah, tebu gajah, tunjuk langit, YTT, puding belacan, putat, kayu manis, limau nipis, Sabah Snake grass, lelipan, aloe vera, haba neraka, lime, pepanggil, Vanilla, keremak and the list goes on..

MAKING PICKLED CERMAI

I have pickled mangoes and papayas but never cermai. So this is a first for me. I googled the ingredients and process and found that it is similar to pickling mangoes. First I washed and soaked the fruit.
Then I weighed the fruit to see how much salt I needed to soak them. It came up to 3 kilogrammes.

I put enough water to cover the cermai and added 6 tablespoons of Himalayan salt. This will be left to soak for 12 hours.

After soaking in brine for 12 hours, I rinsed the cermai and then added syrup. Finally I put a few tablespoons of sugar before closing the lid. I left it to for a day. I also added a bit of vinegar.
This is how the pickled cermai looks like after a day soaked in syrup.  It is then kept in the fridge.

My pickled cermai. To be given to those who have been looking after the plants in the herb garden and those who helped pluck the fruits. FYI I used brown sugar instead of white to do the pickling.
